What Is Àṣẹ? The Divine Force in All Things

Àṣẹ is the heart of Yoruba metaphysics, the divine energy that gives life to all things. To grasp àṣẹ is to grasp the Yoruba worldview at its core.

Àṣẹ (roughly "ah-SHAY") is the foundational idea of Yoruba metaphysics. People translate it as "divine energy," "vital force," "the power to make things happen," or simply "the power of God." None of these are quite right, because àṣẹ does not map cleanly onto Western categories.

Àṣẹ is present in everything. It moves through people, through the earth, through rivers and trees, through the words of the Babalawo, through prayer and ritual. The Orishas hold concentrations of àṣẹ in their own domains. Shango's àṣẹ shows in lightning, Oshun's in the flow of rivers and the sweetness of life.

But àṣẹ is not a vague New Age energy. It is specific, relational, and earned. A Babalawo who has trained for decades and given hundreds of honest consultations carries àṣẹ in his words that a beginner does not. The prayers of someone who has faithfully honoured their Ori and their Orishas carry more weight than the words of someone who has neglected their obligations.

This is why the Yoruba "Àṣẹ," often spoken at the close of a prayer much as others say "Amen," is more than a closing word. It is an affirmation: let this be, may the force of the divine stand behind it, so let it be so.

Building àṣẹ is the work of a lifetime. It does not come from secret knowledge or rare rituals, but from steady alignment: honouring your Ori, respecting the Orishas, treating others with integrity, keeping your ebo. To live well, in the fullest sense, is to build àṣẹ.

Àṣẹ.
